Desks, Consoles and Lighting Design FOr Operator Comfort

We can design custom desks and consoles for specific tasks and or to fit in specific spaces. Designing desks and consoles for a control room is much more than choosing furniture, it’s about supporting 24/7 operations, operator comfort, technology integration, and efficient workflows. At Ideal Systems, we can offer customized configuration desks and consoles form leading manufactures like Lund Halsley, or we can design and build bespoke desks and consoles specifically for your control room or operations centre. The following are some of the key points to be considered when planning consoles for a control room.

  • Ergonomics & Operator Comfort: Fixer or adjustable-height desks (sit/stand capability) should be provided as per operator requirements, with proper viewing angles and distances to reduce eye and neck strain, adequate legroom and knee clearance, soft-edge finishes to avoid wrist strain, frequently used controls placed within comfortable reach, and integral racking for rack-mount equipment on the control surface for operator and Human-Machine Interface (HMI) friendly workflows.

  • Technical Requirements: The console design must allow adequate space and ventilation for CPUs, UPS, and other equipment, include power distribution units (PDUs) with easy access to sockets, integrate network and data ports, and be future-proofed for additional or upgraded equipment.

  • Operator Environment: The environment should include noise reduction materials (acoustic panels, carpets), lighting that minimizes glare, reflection, and flicker (using non-hum dimmer switches), appropriate placement relative to video walls and shared displays, and environmental controls like personal fans and task lighting.

  • Layout & Workflow: The console arrangement should support team communication (e.g., U-shape, arc), provide adequate access space (especially for shift changes), maintain clear sightlines to displays and colleagues, zone critical and infrequent controls accordingly, and include enough storage to avoid clutter.

  • Durability & Materials: Consoles must be built with heavy-duty construction suitable for 24/7 use, with clearly defined expected lifespan, heat/scratch/chemical-resistant surfaces, and easy-to-clean materials.

  • Modular & Flexible Design: Desks and consoles should allow for reconfiguration if needs change, use modular components for easy replacement or upgrades, and feature scalable design to accommodate future growth.
